My Three Favorite Saturation Plugins I Use in My Projects

Saturation can add brightness, harmonics and warmth to a mix. Here are three plugins I reach for when working on different elements in my projects.

1. Waves Abbey Road Saturator — for drums and the master bus

I like Waves Abbey Road Saturator for its range of controls. One feature worth mentioning is its built-in Expand compression, which can add groove and punch to drums in the right context.

I most often use it on a drum bus, and sometimes even on the master bus. As with any processing, I keep an eye on signal level and avoid adding saturation just to make things louder.

2. P42 Climax — my favorite for vocals

P42 Climax is my favorite saturation plugin for vocals. I especially like the ability to fine-tune the high frequencies and add a pleasant “air” or gritty edge when a vocal needs more brightness or presence.

Another useful feature is Mid/Side routing. It allows me to process the center and side components of a signal separately when that approach makes sense for the mix.

3. Arturia Pre TridA — for instruments and instrumentals

For instruments, instrumentals and similar musical elements, I use Pre TridA by Arturia. It offers presets for keys, guitars and pads, flexible controls, and a built-in equalizer.

It is a useful option when I want to find a sound character quickly and then fine-tune it to fit the arrangement and the overall balance of the mix.

My approach is simple: choose a saturator for what the specific sound needs in the mix, not just because the plugin is popular.
