AI Mastering vs a Human Mastering Engineer: An Honest Comparison

Where automated mastering saves time, and where a human engineer better understands context, balance and the artist’s intent.

AI-generated audio can sound convincing, yet digital defects may become obvious on revealing playback systems or after further processing. The useful approach is to identify the source of each problem instead of trying to hide everything with one processor.

What to listen for

Check the track on headphones, monitors, a phone and in mono. Listen to individual stems when available. Depending on the issue, use dynamic EQ, de-essing, vocal editing or replace the affected part. Not every artifact can be repaired with a single plugin.

How to check and fix it

Automated mastering is fast and useful for demos and quick idea checks. A human engineer considers context, references, tonal balance and dynamics, can spot mix problems before mastering and make targeted adjustments.

Automation or an engineer

Choose according to the goal: automation for a quick preliminary result; an engineer for a release that needs control, consistency and a result aligned with the artist’s intent.
